Elvis Afriyie Ankrah Receives NUGS – KNUST Excellence Awad 2017


The 2017 edition of NUGS-KNUST Excellence and Exclusive award in partnership with Koneck media, Nigeria was held on Friday 7, April 2017. This is an annual award organised by the student union to recognise brilliant students in both academic circles and creativity as well as show more deserving key prominent persons that in the past have supported students Union and students in leadership. In a speech by the outgoing women’s commissioner of the school, she stated that “narrating and discussing the students union history in Ghana without mentioning the name Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, is a denial of fact, a calm and collective personality”. Mr. Ankrah on the day of the awards Was described as “a man of immense capabilities”. And in recognition of his immerse contribution to students in leadership, he was honored with the most outstanding personality award by NUGS- KNUST, 2017.

Mr. Ankrah pledged his continuous unflinching support to the youth in building positive attitudinal mindsets and also portraying positive morals among students in leadership.  



He attended the University of Ghana, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English, Drama and Linguistics and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy. At the University, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah was elected as the President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana between 1994 and 1996 and later became the National Executive Co-ordinating Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUG) from 1996 to 1997. He is also an alumnus of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom (UK) and Havard University in the USA.



just before the National Democratic Congress lost the 2016 election, Hon.Elvis Afriyie -Ankrah was a Minister of State at the Presidency, served as a Minister for Youth and Sports and also a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and he is married with four (4) children.




He is a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), having played various roles as a former Parliamentary Candidate, a former Deputy Campaign Spokesperson for the Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills Presidential Candidate race in 2002 and the National Deputy Campaign Manager for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Atta-Mills Presidential Campaign in the 2004 general elections in Ghana.



In the 2008 general elections, he was the Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Operations for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In the 2012 general elections, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah was the National Campaign Co-ordinator for the National Democratic Congress and the John Dramani Mahama Presidential Campaign. It goes without saying that the NDC won both the 2008 and 2012 general elections.





Hon.Afriyie Ankrah is a gem of his own kind and a multi gifted personality. He is a former lecturer and Head of the English and Communication Studies Department at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

Outside politics, he has a flair in entrepreneurship, events management and consultancy as well as public relations and human resource management consultancy. He is also an astute (motivational) speaker and has had speaking engagements on a myriad of topics such as Africa’s economic development; youth entrepreneurship and employment; and other youth-related issues in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Canada and Germany. He is also very passionate about working with young people as a result of his experiences as a former student leader and also through his work in public service.


Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah is devoted Christian who is passionate about promoting the spreading of the Gospel. He has been one of the supporters of this important ministry and he sponsors a specific team to undertake a prayer tour every year. He is also a preacher of the Gospel and a prominent member of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry (CEM). He is a partner to many ministries and a consistent sponsor of the Rhapsody of Realities; Christ Embassy’s daily devotional guide.


He has attended several international Christian missions including the Ambaricho Interntional Prayer Ministries on the Hambaricho Mountains in Durame, Ethiopia.


He is part of the team which organises Ministers of the Gospel from all over the nation to pray for the Presidency and the nation. He is a politician who never discards his Christian faith and he firmly believes in prayer and intercession. (I Timothy 2:1-3: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for Kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour).


He has always advocated for the nation to seek the face and Kingdom of God first through prayer and intercession and as a result, been a major sponsor for our mission and national prayer tour.
